Description
Machinist/Toolmaker Apprentice Job Description
Reports to Toolmaker
-Learn from and assist Toolmaker in designing, fabricating, building, machining, and/or changeover and repair tooling and equipment as required.
-Learn from and assist Toolmaker in managing tooling process (tool room issues and tool maintenance, including sharpening procedures).
-Learn from and assist Toolmaker in troubleshooting quality and tooling problems, identifying the root cause of the problem, and make necessary adjustments or changes to provide a more robust solution.
-Learn from and assist Toolmaker in designing and/or building jigs and fixtures from sketches and drawings to facilitate the fabrication of tooling components or custom parts.
-Learn from and assist Toolmaker in seeing the weaknesses in component or part designs and make innovative suggestions to make improvements regarding safety, quality, accuracy, and efficiency.

-Maintain a clean and organized workbench and toolroom.
-Make sample parts.
-Work up pricing for sample material and hours.
-Make equipment recommendations.
-Perform minor press repairs.
-Order toolroom supplies and raw material for tooling and samples.
-Suggest changes to Tool Changeover Book to Design Engineer.
-Contribute in other areas of tooling development, quality, and manufacturing.
- Continuously improve processes.
-Take part in LEAN projects as assigned.
-Inspect parts as part of quality program
-Full-time non-exempt
-Qualifications
-Skills
-Setup, operate, and maintain manual and CNC mills (Bridgeport EZ-Trak), lathes, EDM (Mitsubishi), surface grinders, drill presses, and other common tool room equipment with precision.
-Use, read, understand, and apply the operation of precision measuring instruments like micrometers, Vernier calipers, dial indicators, comparators, gauges, and others to make and verify measurements.
- Read engineering drawings and be able to machine parts accurately to dimensions, tolerances, and finish specifications.
-Basic computer
-Speak, read, and write English fluently
- Experience
-Progressive and compound tooling (timing, punch and die clearances, sharpening, and adjustments to make a stamped part within tolerance)
- Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
