Job Title: Massachusetts Community Organizer
Supervisor: MA Organizing Manager
Position Status: Full-time
Position Location: Home office in the Worcester, MA area. Mothers Out Front is a largely virtual organization. While this position will be performed from a home office, the role is located in the Worcester MA area.

Position Summary: The Massachusetts Community Organizer builds and supports volunteer-led community teams to grow a diverse and powerful movement of mothers that develops and implements campaigns to achieve a swift, complete, and just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Specifically, the Community Organizer works to:
1. Identify mothers, grandmothers and other caregivers in Worcester and Central Massachusetts who share Mothers Out Front’s goals and are willing to take action to reduce climate change;
2. Support the creation of member-led teams in diverse communities in Worcester and Central Massachusetts by helping to organize house parties and coaching team leaders and potential leaders;
3. Support member-led teams to launch and carry out local Mothers Out Front campaigns;
4. Connect local teams to state campaigns and national Mothers Out Front movement work across states; and
5. Provide “in-the-background” support and training to team members to strengthen their leadership skills, including their use of data and technology to support organizing.

About Mothers Out Front: Mothers Out Front is building a diverse national movement of mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers dedicated to convincing elected officials and business leaders to work aggressively for a swift, complete, and just transition away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. Our goal is simple: to enable mothers to take active leadership in protecting their children, by providing the structure, training, and tools for them to work together on campaigns in their communities and at the statewide level. We are a member-led, national organization, with an annual operating budget of $1.8M and 16 staff working across the country. Founded in 2013, the organization has experienced rapid growth and has plans for continued expansion.

Responsibilities:
Outreach to potential members and team leaders:
✔ Develop relationships with a diverse array of individuals, community leaders and allied organizations in Worcester and surrounding towns -- beyond the environmental field and including youth, communities of color and low-income people. This includes a heavy emphasis on one-to-one meetings.
✔ Identify and support volunteers to coordinate house parties or other gatherings of mothers, providing materials and helping with logistics and follow up. This includes:
✔ Communicating the schedule of house parties and events and enlisting experienced volunteers to serve as facilitators.
✔ Working with hosts and experienced leaders to ensure that house party hosts have the toolkit, materials and support they need for their events.
✔ Working with house party hosts on a plan to follow up with attendees and others after the house party;
✔ Making sure that names and contact information of attendees are entered into the central database.

Start and Support Local Community Teams
✔ Initiate outreach and build one-to-one relationships with mothers, grandmothers and community members in Worcester and surrounding towns with the goal of starting new community teams.
✔ Coach member/volunteers to set and meet goals to engage new people and develop strategy for campaigns that will turn people power into action to achieve concrete change at the local and state level.
✔ Coach member/volunteers to recruit supporters, identify people for leadership roles, and enact strategy.

Support Data Collection and Tracking (i.e. Keep track of the number of people engaged, number of house parties and other events, and other relevant data to measure progress and effectiveness)
✔ Identify and train Data Coordinators for community teams.
✔ Track and ensure that all data from Central Massachusetts teams is entered into NationBuilder and is effectively used by community teams.
✔ Perform miscellaneous tasks as part of a statewide and organization-wide effort to track and use data and related communication tools more effectively.

Support the Development of Local Leadership:
✔ Coordinate planning meetings of leaders to hold events that bring local leaders together.
✔ Support the local volunteer team(s) so that they achieve their goals.
✔ Coach and cultivate member leadership to: develop effective campaigns; increase the number of people in the movement; ensure communication across volunteer teams; move leaders into new roles including state leadership team.
✔ Work collaboratively to develop systems of communication to ensure that local, state and national organizing are growing and learning in tandem

Organizational Development and Broader Movement work:
✔ Actively engage as part of the Mothers Out Front Organizing Team to codify best practices, enhance learning, and grow our organizing expertise.
✔ Collaborate with Mothers Out Front staff and volunteers working nationally to develop and implement our framework consistently and effectively across states and communities as we grow.
✔ Support the growth and development of the organization as a whole through collaborating with staff across work areas, supporting staff-wide initiatives, and building a strong and supportive organization that reflects the values of our movement

Qualifications
✔ Demonstrated experience organizing
✔ A network of existing relationships within Worcester and ties to local organizations in the City (preferred)
✔ Spanish speaking (preferred)
✔ Demonstrated understanding of climate justice & environmental justice issues
✔ Commitment to fighting climate change
✔ Passion for developing the leadership of mothers
✔ Highly creative, flexible and motivated to foster the creation of member-led teams
✔ Racial Justice competencies and commitment to anti oppression work. Demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, physical ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and generational backgrounds
✔ Ability to succeed in a changing, fast-paced environment, to plan and prioritize effectively, to manage multiple projects, and to meet competing demands and deadlines.
✔ Attention to detail.
✔ Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
✔ High level of professionalism.
✔ Capacity to “roll up your sleeves” in a startup nonprofit organization.
✔ Demonstrated intermediate experience with database software used for fund raising, organizing, or something similar and standard office software
✔ Ability to work independently and as team player
✔ Ability to maintain a home office with wifi, phone connection and other standard communication tools.
✔ Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings
✔ Ability to travel within Worcester and surrounding towns and occasionally throughout the state.
✔ Experience working with volunteers and planning events.
✔ Excitement about continuous learning
